    Description

1924 photograph of the reptile show, with Jumbo the python (from the photos I have seen of the snake and as someone who has owned and raised 100's of species of exotic animals, including snakes, I believe it is an anaconda.  I unfortunately do not own a photo of the snake here; but I wanted to mention this, in case this distinction is important to the buyer.), owned by James Dunlevy, at the Davenport, Iowa carnival, that year; which was put on by Rubin and Cherry.  You can see people gathered around Jumbo's enclosure at the top of the stairs.  The photograph has great detail and tonality and on the reverse, written in blue ink, is the inscription "Davenport, Iowa Aug 11-24 'Rep' Show James Dunlevy. R. and C. Shows." and, written in pencil by the developer, "P-46."  The date format on this photo is not a traditional date format for what it is trying to convey.  Usually, the way it is written, it would mean August 11th-24th; however, this person who wrote this has written most of their dates in this format, to signify the month, the day, and the two digit year number.  So, in this case, it would be August 11th, 1924.  I am not only basing the date on how the inscriber has written on other photographs and the dates have been confirmed.  I am also basing the date on the fact that a few of the photos, from this set of Davenport, Iowa carnival photos, have the year 1924 or the season of 1924 posted in areas within the actual photograph itself.  This guarantees that these photos are from the 1924 season and that the date is just written in an non-traditional format.  The photograph measures approximately 4 1/4" wide x 2 5/8" tall and has pieces of black photo album paper still attached to it, on the reverse; as well as a developer's advertising stamp.  There is also some surface paper loss to the reverse top right hand corner, causing a thinning to the photo paper; but does not cause any loss to the photo itself or loss of form.
This photo came from a Ruskin, FL, carnival and circus family's estate and photograph and memorabilia collection from the 1910's-30's  They were involved with the C.R. Leggette Shows, St. Louis Amusement Company, De Kreko Bros, and a few others.  They traveled all over the United States and worked with some of the famous sideshow performers and "freaks" of the time.  I have been fortunate enough to acquire this amazing collection of photographs and RPPCs and will be listing them a few listings at a time.  These listings will include signed photos and RPPCs of many performers and "freaks;" as well as many very rare photographs of performances, booths and games, circus train cars, the devastating 1934 Maine fairgrounds grandstand fire, rides, people and animals involved with these circuses, personal photographs of the families, and more.  In this collection was also a number of non-circus related important historical photographs and RPPCs, from their travels.  For example they have a photo of Admiral Byrd inspecting his ship to head out on his second expedition to the Antarctic, they have a photo from Chief Osceola's great-granddaughter's wedding, one of the first Goodyear Blimps picking up riders, and more.
