    Description

Antique 1908 Exploding Wood Paddle Clown Lodge Initiation Charles B. Post
    Used
I am pleased to offer a very unique item from the early 1900's.
This piece was patented as an "Amusement Device" by Charles B. Post in 1908.
Measures 25-1/2" in length and is 6" at the widest point.  The padded area is 2-1/2" thick.
It is designed with a flat heavy wooden paddle piece with attached leather covered padding with metal fittings on the opposite side.  Molded into the flat wooden side is a metal area with a removable post.
Slide a blank shell into the post, insert and lock post into the formed area, and when the paddle is hit hard enough, the shell will explode.
This piece was originally designed for use by Circus and Fair Clowns, but also was marketed to Lodges for initiations.  There is a brass tag attached to one side that reads "Patented March 10, 1908, No. 881150".  The original patent application can be viewed on Google Patents.
This is a very unique conversation piece that still displays well.  It would be a wonderful addition to any collection.
